Victorian Tea Etiquette - Which Mistakes Have You Made?

Writer's picture: SaChasiSaChasi

Did you know that, according to Victorian tea etiquette, there are several do's and don'ts. However, some behaviours have been happening for such a long time that we now don't even realise they're wrong! Below is a list of common faux pas (and the right way to execute good manners at the tea table):

🫖 You should never look over the cup whilst you drink your tea 👀

🫖 Biscuit-dunking is also a no-no 🍪

🫖 Sticking out your little finger does not make you fancier. Simply hold the teacup using your thumb and forefinger (or two fingers, if needed) 🫰

🫖 Splitting your scone with a knife is a cardinal sin. Always split it by hand 🫳

🫖 Napkins are for your lap, not solely a table accessory.

🫖 Saucers can be held if standing, but must be placed on the table with the cup on top if seated.

🫖 Do not drink tea when your spoon is still in the cup 🥄

🫖 When not in use, your spoon should rest behind the tea cup and to the right of the handle at a 15-degree angle on the saucer ☕️

Have you made any of these mistakes, or is your afternoon tea etiquette of the highest calibre? If not, and you are unsure as to whether you have the willpower to resist dunking a biscuit, it's fortunate that our all-natural and skin-supporting blends are specially curated to combine a dessert experience with every sip.

Such as our "Raspberry Rose Friands" 🌹☕

This black tea infusion combines a beautifully nutty almond cake taste with a jammy swirl, made from raspberries & rosehip powder (the seed pods of the rose plant). These pods are famed for their high vitamin C content and carotenoids, both of which contribute to a brighter and more even-toned complexion 💕

So next time you hold a formal afternoon tea party, remember this: look into your cup, don't dunk the cookies, keep your pinkies in and, of course, serve a tall pot of your favourite SaChasi blend 🫖
